G Shock GD 400

G-Shock GD-400 Review

In all fairness, watches are supposed to tell time, but the days when they only used to do that are all gone.

The watch industry has come a long way from its early beginnings as people raised the bar for their expectations over the years. A watch telling you time isn’t going to do it anymore. Some come with Bluetooth connection; some come even with GPS whereas others are made to withstand the most demanding environments.

Long story short, watches have become a useful and reliable tool that helps one not only know the time, but also help him survive through thick and thin- literarily.

Why does G-Shock watches matter so much for the outdoor watch market?

Somewhere along the way, people within the watch industry realized that a watch taking a shock or a couple of splashes was more than necessary. One of Casio’s engineers was determined enough to create that kind watch, and it took him a couple of hundreds of samples to get it right.

It was the 80s when Casio gave the world the very first model of G-Shock watches that impressed with its resistance on several levels. The first G-Shock sure resisted the gravitational shock (here’s the explanation behind the name), but it also presented water resistance.

It’s important to highlight that the G-Shock watches became soon enough the equivalent of toughness as they came with resistance to electric shock, low-temperature, vibration, and impact. Some unique technologies had to be used so that the G-Shock watches would present this kind of strength. The floating timekeeping modules or the urethane for better protection of the elements inside are only some to remind.

One would fall into temptation and think that the looks were overlooked, but that’s not the case with G-Shock watches. They still make an excellent impression, and Casio G-Shock has never ceased to create a striking and sophisticated appearance that have a say about the world we live in.

A few words about the Casio G-Shock 400MB-1CR!

As the sturdy build is fundamental for the G-shock watches, the 400 MB-1CR is one of the best examples of the iconic ruggedness of watches within the G-Shock series.

The watch comes with a rather classic design, but it comes in 5 different color combinations. Each is going to make an excellent impression, nevertheless.

One thing that sets them apart from other G-Shock watches is the protector for the area where the band is connecting to the clock. This specific detail is going to increase the protection against the impact, in case of anything.

Which details count the most?

The watch is both shock and water resistant up to 660ft. It means that you can use it for various professional marine activity and professional-level surface water sports, but you cannot take it for diving.

The watch comes with a resin band that feels comfortable, which is a bit confusing, considering the size of the watch. The band has a rubbery feel against the skin, but it’s not going to get all sticky if your arm gets wet in any way. When you’re out there for a challenging job, the last thing you want is not to be able to move up/down your watch because of the sweat.

Once again, we cannot stress the comfortable feel that the watch has on the wrist as it’s lightweight, despite the large size. You may wear it for 24 hours straight without feeling any strain for your arm or wrist.

The dial is made with mineral glass which is going to handle a couple of scratches well. Both the case and the bezel are made with resin, taking the excess use for a reasonable amount of time.

The list of great features continues with the LED backlight which eases out the reading, day and night. The Super Illuminator makes the visibility good at night. The watch comes with an Auto light switch which is going to save the battery. You can also set the illumination duration (1.5seconds or 3 seconds), which means a lot for the battery and the customization of the watch. As if all of these features weren’t enough, the list continues with the Afterglow function for better visibility when it’s dark outside.

You may set 5 daily alarms or one-time alarms. The watch is going to flash with buzzer. It has an hourly time signal and countdown timer as well. Many are going to find the button tone useful, especially since you can turn it on/off.

The Multi_time function (4 different cities) helps you set the watch according to your needs, whereas the World Time function gives versatility and precision. The clock tells time for 31 time zones (48 cities and Coordinated Universal Time) and is always accurate thanks to the Daylight saving on/off function. You may easily swap between Home city and World Time city, whenever you need.

The watch performs 1/100-second stopwatch and provides several measuring modes: elapsed time, split time, and 1st-2nd place times. As for the countdown timer, it comes with  1/10 second measuring unit and a 24 hours countdown range. The watch features 1-second, 1-minute, and 1-hour increments.

Needless to say, the watch has Quartz movement and Full Auto-calendar (to the year 2099). It provides regular timekeeping: hour, minute, second, pm, month, date, day. Its precision is the typical 15 seconds per month (give or take), and the battery  CR2016 has a three years life.

Trustworthy, functional, simple, and dependable, the watch is an excellent choice for any soldier.

What are the best things about it? Are there any downsides?

As with everything in life, there are several things we like a lot on the watch:

  • It has a simple, yet dependable design
  • It’s robust, accurate, and easy to use
  • It has excellent visibility and a durable feel to it
  • It’s lightweight, comfortable, and handles surface water sports

The inherent flaws are nothing to worry about:

  • The indoor visibility can use some improvement
  • Not everyone goes for the negative display

Is it a “Go” or not?

Dependable, sturdy, simple, easy to use, and capable to withstand most challenging conditions, the watch is one power horse that any military is going to like. Its price seals the deal, for sure.
