G Shock 5600 review

G Shock 5600 Review

One thing that money can’t buy is time. You can, however, buy an excellent tool to keep you an eye on how fast time is flying. Many of us don’t pay attention that much when buying a watch. Telling time may accurately and taking regular use for a long time (or at least that’s what we’re hoping for) may be enough criteria to make our choice.

However, some of us (outdoor frenzies, professionals in the military or law enforcement) don’t need any regular watch. They need a watch that is highly reliable and helps them stay alive when in the line of duty or getting lost in the middle of nowhere. If only that were this type of watches.

Why is the world so fascinated with Casio G-Shock?

If you’re alive and well today, the chances are you may have heard about G-Shock watches even if you’re not a timepieces aficionado.

Some decades ago, a Casio engineered was focused on just one thing: creating the most robust watch. Two hundred handmade samples later, he was capable of creating that watch. The Casio DW-5000C was launched and impressed everyone with its shock resistance and water resistance.

  • The key features

The “Triple 10” principle was what MR. Ibe (the Casio engineer) had in mind when developing the watch. It would take a 10 meter (33ft) free-fall, come with a 10-year lasting battery, and present a 10-bar water resistance (100 meters, which is 330ft). To this day, G-Shock watches come with features that make all the other opponents look fable. Resistance to electrical shock, gravity, low-temperatures, vibration, and impact are abilities that make G-Shock watches stand out on the market. Most of the models nowadays come with 660ft water resistance- and that’s something worth considering.

  • The style

One may think that Casio G-Shock had to sacrifice the form for obtaining that kind of strength, but they couldn’t be more wrong. By contrary, G-Shock watches come with round and rectangular shapes, analog, digital, or both analog and digital display. Casio collaborated with many artists, famous athletes, and environmental organizations over the years, releasing lines that would honor the previously mentioned people. Its connection to the essential matters of today’s world is constant, which is why many G-Shock models have something interesting to say, apart from the standard functions.

  • The prices

The price is another great thing about G-Shock watches as you may find tough and rugged models for less than $40. G-Shock watches are durable because of the technologies used in the making, and not because of the materials. Urethane protecting the essential elements or floating timekeeping modules are only some to highlight. Many affordable G-Shock models feature resin bands and cases, but you may find pricier models that come with sapphire crystal dials or carbon case. However, the affordable models are just as robust as the more expensive ones.

  • The advanced features

New and pricier models come with more advanced features, which explain the higher prices. GPS, Triple Sensor, Multi-Band-6, Atomic Timekeeping, Digital Compass,  and Solar power are only some to name. If you’re going to pay a couple of hundreds for the models that come with most of the mentioned functions, you can also pay around $100 for a model that comes with Solar Power and Multi-Band 6 connectivity. Needless to say, it’s less than watches from other brands at affordable prices are what makes G-Shock so unique in the watch world.

What’s to say about the G-Shock 5600 series?

The G-Shock 5600 resembles a lot the original G-Shock, and its rectangular shape is the main reason for it. The first G-Shock 5600 series hit the market at the end of the 80s and has been on stage one way or another.

It’s instead a basic G-Shock model, but there’s nothing ordinary about its build or functions. The new 5600 does come with more, and it’s a solid choice, just as its original version.

One of the greatest things about the 5600 (or the 5600E, to be more accurate) is the price as it comes for $40 (give or take). Even if the pricier model within the series (scroll down for the details) still makes it as a well-priced, considering its overall value.

We should also highlight that, no matter the materials or the models of the series (or any other collection from G-Shock), the ruggedness is durabilities never to be doubted. G-Shock watches are tough as nails, even when you pay less than $50 for one.

    1. G-shock DW5600E-1V

The most popular choice from G-Shock 5600 is the Casio Men’s G-shock DW5600E-1V Shock Resistant Black Resin Sport Watch. It may be the price that makes it such a seller or its extraordinary value for the buck you’re paying- it’s up to you to decide.

Just like all the other G-Shock watches, the 5600E comes with water resistance up to 660ft and shock resistance as well. You may confidently take it when scuba diving on an amateur level.

It’s a designed G-Shock that has a retro feel to it since it’s similar to the iconic model, with the black strap and the black rectangular black case as main design features. Strenuous sporting activities or military missions is where the watch is going to shine the most.

The list of functions is typical for G-Shock watches. It includes a countdown timer, Hourly Time signal, 1/100 second stopwatch, elapsed and split time modes, 1st-2nd place times. The countdown timer covers a 24-hour range. You may set multi-function alarm and turn off the hourly time signal. It’s plenty of adjustability for such a cheap watch.

The list continues with the Auto-calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2039), and Auto-repeat function.

You shouldn’t stress about not being able to read the watch in dim light as the watch comes with EL backlight. The Afterglow function is useful in poor light conditions.

Not operating the buttons for a while is going to stop the flashing function. The watch is going to get back to the timekeeping mode.

Some are going to highlight that the navigations buttons are a bit difficult to press. It’s important to mention, though, that it’s a purpose-designed to reduce the risk for accidental pushing. It’s not a flaw or a defect.

The accuracy is regular for G-Shock watches: 15 seconds per month, give or take. It’s the Japanese Quartz movement that provides this level of precision.

The watch comes with a resin case and band. The band features a buckle clasp for easier adjusting. The clock is lightweight and comfortable, whereas the band stays in place even when the wrist gets all sweaty.

Here are the best parts of the 5600E:

  • It’s shock and water resistant up to 660ft
  • It’s comfortable, lightweight, and tough
  • It’s accurate and comes with many functions
  • It’s excellent value for the money and long lasting

Far from being deal breakers, its flaws are worth to mention:

  • Some think that the band is a tad thin
  • Not everyone likes having to press the buttons a bit harder than expected. Even if it’s for safety reasons

Affordable, dependable, long lasting, and famous, the G-Shock 5600E is quite the Jack of all trades, and you should give it a go.

   2. G-Shock Unisex DW-5600BB

If you’re going for the classic and less busy dial on your watch, you should take a look at the G-Shock Unisex DW-5600BB instead.

The watch comes with a matte black finish for the dial, the case, and the resin band, becoming a subtle and fashionable option for everyday wear.

The case back is made with stainless steel, which is one of the reasons for the slightly higher price than of the 5600E. It’s a sturdy watch that also comes with vibration resistance.

The watch makes no exception and comes with the standard features of G-Shock watches. It’s shock resistant and water resistant up to 660ft, taking the professional diving. It features durable mineral glass that handles scratching.

Its list of functions includes Multifunction alarm (daily alarm, date alarm, monthly alarm, alarm for every day of a specific month), and comes with Automatic calendar until 2039. You can still operate the countdown timer with the 1-second measuring unit and 24 -hour range. It ensures 12/24-hour timekeeping.

The EL backlight with Afterglow function eases out the efforts while reading the watch, even though some may need some time adjusting to the negative display.

Let’s take a look at the positive things:

  • It’s resistant to shock, vibration, and water (up to 660ft)
  • You can wear it for professional diving
  • The stainless steel case back is tough
  • It’s dependable, precise, and has a subtle profile

The downsides aren’t significant:

  • It’s a bit pricier than the 5600E
  • It looks better on a small wrist

The good outweighs the bad, and the G-Shock 5600 BB stands out as an elegant, classy, yet sturdy watch that you should wear every single day.

   3. G-Shock DW5600MS-1CR G-Force

When you dig the military feel on your G-Shock, the Casio Men’s DW5600MS-1CR G-Force Military Concept Black Digital Watch should be your top choice. The watch comes with the simple functions of G-Shock 5600 series, and its “military concept” is found in the black matte finish. The watch has a reverse LCD digital display and red EL backlight. Even if the black model makes the perfect choice for military personnel, there are many other color combinations to choose from.

Shock resistant and water resistant up to 660ft, the watch comes with a resin band and resin case, handling the excess wear for a very long time.

Flash Alert, hourly time signals, multi-function alarms, 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer (measuring unit is 1 second, and countdown range is 24 hours), increments for 1 seconds/1minute, and 1-hours, Auto-repeat, 12/24-hour format, and regular timekeeping (hour, minute, second, pm, month, date, and day) are on the list of functions. The EL backlight with Afterglow makes the reading easy in many situations.

Unlike previous models, this one comes with full auto-calendar to the year 2099.

Listing our favs:

  • It’s tough and durable
  • It’s water and shock resistant
  • It comes with many functions
  • It has a rugged and military feel to it

The downsides are nothing to worry about:

  • Some find it difficult to read in dim light
  • It’s smaller than expected by some

Built like a tank and presenting a rugged feel, the G-Shock 5600 MS-1CR is one sturdy watch that anyone in the military can rely on.

   4. G-Shock DW-5600M

When you’re looking for a lightweight and fun G-Shock 5600, you should take the plunge with the Casio G-Shock DW-5600M Gulfmaster Summer Color Theme Stylish Watch – Blue / One S.

G-Shock DW-5600M

The blue color of the band and case goes excellent with the white dial, giving that lightweight and fresh feel for the watch. It’s what makes it such a lovely choice for the summer days.

The resin band is comfortable and doesn’t slide up/down, no matter how wet or sweaty your wrist may become. The square case has a good build, and the four screws give a durable feel to the watch.

The white dial doesn’t just look good but also increases the visibility of the black digital display, date, and time function including.

The watch is shock and water resistant to 660ft. It’s easy to read in all sorts of lights, whereas the EL backlight makes the reading in dim light conditions easy.

The list of function is just as good as all of the other watches within the series. Multi-functional alarm, hourly time signal, flash alert, countdown timer, stopwatch, and 12/24 formats work just fine. The accuracy is on the spot, thanks to the Quartz movement running the watch.

Here’s what we like about this one:

  • It has a fresh and lightweight feel to it
  • It looks nice and bright
  • It’s tough, shock and water resistant
  • It’s lightweight and comfortable

The cons are nothing to make us change our mind:

  • Some think it works better for kids
  • It doesn’t have a durability feel to it

Regardless of the minor issues, for the excellent build and fresh appearance, the watch is always money well spent.

   5. G-Shock G-Lide GWX-5600-1JF

Remember the part about the advanced features that would lead to higher-priced G-Shock 5600? It’s the case of the Casio Men’s GWX-5600-1JF G-Shock G-Lide Tough Solar Radio Controlled Watch which comes with Solar Power and Multi-Band 6. In all fairness, the watch doesn’t qualify as a high-dollar watch, but it’s pricier than the popular 5600E (you may find it for three times the price of the 5600E).

The watch comes with Tough Solar, which means you’re not going to stress about changing the batteries any time soon. Thanks to the power saving function, the battery is going to last even longer than expected, also when you’re not exposing the watch to the source of light. Anyway, the battery charge indicator is going to keep you posted about the level of the battery.

Another feature that explains the higher price and the higher value is the Multiband -6, which means that the watch is going to receive data throughout the day for syncing. It’s a fantastic feature that provides unbelievable accuracy for your watch.

The list of functions also includes Moon data and Tide graph, which outdoor frenzies (fishers more than anyone else) are going to appreciate a lot. Stopwatch 1/100 seconds, Alarm, World Time (31 time zones, 48 cities, and Universal Time Coordination), 12/24 hour switch, and full auto-calendar are also on the list. You may set the sound for turning it on/off. The EL backlight increases the visibility for the dial.

All functions are easy to use, and the watch is rather easy to adjust.

Resin is used for the case and the band, so the watch is both durable and comfortable to wear. It’s water resistant to 660ft and comes with inorganic glass for the dial. Its shock resistant structure makes it a sturdy watch for outdoor enthusiasts.

Listing our favorite aspects:

  • It includes Solar power function and Multi-band 6
  • It performs tide graph and moon phase functions
  • It’s long lasting and accurate
  • It’s well made and takes a beat

Bells and whistles aside, here’s what we like less:

  • Even though it’s not obvious, some don’t go for the colored accents
  • It’s a lot pricier than the 5600E

All in all, as it comes with advanced features and excellent build, the watch is always a wise investment.

One last recommendation

As long as your mind is set on a G-Shock 5600, it shouldn’t be tricky or complicated to decide on a model. Check your wallet and give a good thought on your needs when selecting, nevertheless!
